I know what you're thinking - crikey he fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down! OK, so I'm no looker. I've got a face for radio, which is fine because its a great medium and has a great future, in spite of claims by some to the contrary....and not least because its provided me with a fascinating career and a way of life I wouldn't swap for anything (well, almost anything!) for over 25 years!

My earliest memories of radio listening are as a toddler with my dad, late 1950s/early 1960s, hunched over big old valve radio in the kitchen; catching snippets of static sounds, call signs, music and voices from around the world. I was well and truly hooked by the "magic" of the medium and have been ever since. I've still got that old valve radio - sadly no longer working - just pops and crackles away with the tuning panel glowing mysteriously in the dark - but I'm loathed to part with it as it signifies where my broadcasting journey through life all began......... I missed out on the 60's offshore era - parents being more BBC Light and Home Service types...and I think I was about 15 before dad bought a car with a radio in it!So, it was the original Radios Seagull, Caroline, RNI, Atlantis - heck even Mi Amigo and Veronica (although I could never understand what was being said) that provided the musical backdrop to my student years at university in the early to mid 70s and I've remained fascinated and a supporter to this day. The hair might have thinned to almost nothing and the wasteline expanded, but I can still rock with the best of them! Rock music - classic and new sounds that came along over the years - have always remained favourites (I was never into disco!) and I've always believed that programmes broadcast from a ship offered something extra special listeners should always treasure.......I think it takes a certain type of person to get that...........and its great Seagull has listeners who do just that....you discerning, intelligent bunch, you........Welcome to a very special world! Like many, I've often been frustrated at the formulaic, predictable radio most listeners allow themselves to be subjected to and saddened by the lack of foresight and risk taking by those who make the decisions, which has sometimes been a source of professional frustration too......because.......work has eventually resulted in a "day job" for me as a Programmes Editor and senior manager with a major international broadcasting organisation. And, oh boy, do I like to bend those rules. Someone once asked me what my philosophy was, and I said "I like to skate on the other side of the ice!" Well, thats a little about me: I'm delighted to be part of the Radio Seagull line up - its a great station with exactly the right philosophy about how to give listeners what they want....and I look forward to your company Saturdays and a chance for us to get to know one another better........ Until then......to borrow a line from the Pink Floyd songbook:

Shine on you crazy diamonds!
